Business case studies
LinedUp
LinedUp is a creative digital studio based at Pool Innovation Centre in Camborne. The business was set up in 2010 by director Jonathan Davies following a career as a technical director in various design agencies in Cornwall and elsewhere.
Jonathan’s home is in St Agnes, one of the first pilot exchanges to offer superfast broadband in Cornwall and Jonathan was one of the very first to connect to superfast broadband.
He says: “The speeds are staggering. I am getting 38 Mbps download and 8 Mbps upload. This is fantastic and a real game-changer.
“My business provides top quality interactive digital solutions, with a particular focus on iPhone apps and eCommerce. For both, it is essential that I have a reliable and fast connection. The upload speeds are particularly important to me as I typically send files with high resolution images or large eCommerce databases.
Working as effectively from home
“I work from home part of the week, primarily so that I can be involved in helping take my young children to preschool, and with superfast, I can work from home in St Agnes as effectively as just about anywhere in the world.
“The superfast connection at home also helps me deliver a better service to my clients. For example, my eCommerce clients expect 24/7 support and with superfast at home it is straightforward to step in immediately should there be an emergency out of hours.
“It also means that I have a totally reliable connection to upload any changes to my clients’ websites. The last thing you want is to lose a connection when you are halfway through updating a website. With superfast, there is no risk of this and the additional reassurance is worth its weight in gold.
Improved productivity
“I am able to work more productively with superfast broadband and also work remotely, because the connection is so stable. For example, this morning I was able to connect up to my office PC remotely and watch a video on the home computer. It is quite amazing! Superfast really does open up new ways of working. This will be especially useful to me as I am very mobile and need to be able to work from anywhere, not least because I intend to target potential clients overseas as well as within the UK.
LinedUp – and ready to go!
“I am expecting the use of video on the internet to increase as more people get connected to superfast broadband and I plan to develop this market. Having the advantage of superfast ahead of many of my competitors elsewhere in the UK will give me a competitive edge as I look to exploit this fantastic opportunity.
“With superfast broadband, I have increased flexibility in the way I run my business. I can work from home whenever I choose. This improves my work-life balance, saves time, avoids having to travel and means I can provide fast response to clients round the clock.
"Superfast broadband has so expanded my horizons that I have also launched a second venture, Mail Rocket, providing email marketing solutions for businesses across the UK. This new business offers either fully managed services or self-service solutions enabling clients to send branded email campaigns whenever they want, as well as analytics tools and real-time reports. With superfast broadband, this new start-up will also be able to provide a world class service, reach out to customers in new ways and provide reliable great service to clients.”
