Calculating your carbon footprint
Please use the tool below to calculate your carbon footprint and be part of this exciting initiative. Please read these brief notes which provide some important guidance on how the carbon calculator should be used and different options available to you.
Setting the Baseline
On first using the tool it is important to establish your baseline carbon footprint for the previous year. To do this retrieve or estimate the data required for each tab for the period Jan-December of the previous year and enter this in December of that year. For example, if you are starting to use the tool during 2012, enter a full year's worth of data in December 2011. If you are starting to use the tool in a month other than January 2012 or a quarter other than Q1, please estimate data for all months/quarters of 2012 prior to the one in which you are starting.
Monthly, Quarterly or Annually?
The calculator enables you to enter data monthly - and taking this approach is likely to result in the most accurate footprint. But if you prefer you can enter data quarterly or annually. For quarterly input, enter the data in the last month of each quarter (but remember that this should cover all three months.) For annual input, enter the full 12 months' worth of data in December of the required year.)
Required Data
You may find it useful to pull together the following data prior to completing the calculator:
- Energy utility bills for the period in question
- Mileage travelled in all cars during the period in question and, if known, quantity of fuel used. It is likely that your initial baseline data will be an estimate for the year, but you may be able to get a more accurate view of your miles travelled from, e.g. MOT certificates or insurance documents. We recommend that you make a note of your car's milometer reading in order to enable an accurate measurement for subsequent entries.
- A list of all equipment connected to your broadband/superfast broadband line
Other tips
Once you have entered your data on each tab don't forget to hit the Calculate & Save button! If you move on to the next tab without hitting Calculate & Save you will have to re-enter the data!
Try to avoid using the BACK button on your browser. Doing so will lose any data entered but not calculated.
