Environmental benefits
Superfast broadband will bring environmental benefits to Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.
By making it easier to work from home and use video-conferencing or email rather than travel to meetings, the amount of commuter and business travel will be reduced.
This will cut down on travel congestion in Cornwall as well as reduce carbon emissions.
In future, many knowledge-based businesses will be able to work effectively from remote parts of Cornwall, rather than needing to be based in towns and urban offices, keeping rural villages thriving and vibrant. Some businesses may opt for smaller office spaces or even none at all, making more use of flexible working space, again saving energy.
And because it is so easy and fast to send large files with superfast broadband, it will help us all move towards less use of paper, again helping the environment.
Businesses will be able to cut down on business travel as a result of having access to information no matter where they are; no need to keep getting back to the office to update systems! In time, as other services become available in new ways online, lots of other people will be able to enjoy reductions in their travel too - for example, accessing health, care and education services in convenient new ways, without leaving home.
Superfast broadband will also help us all reduce our energy use. For businesses, cloud computing will take away the need for energy-hungry servers at every office whilst virtual private networks will allow PCs to be remotely hosted, saving energy too. And for home users, superfast speeds mean you can cut down on the time you need to be connected for certain tasks, saving energy as well as money.
What's more, many fibre optic networks will use less energy than today's networks as well as be more reliable so vans wont need to travel around fixing them quite so often.
